Good News or Bad News?
Do the CCP’s Internal Crises Preclude, or Precipitate, a Shooting War?
WASHINGTON—In Vietnam last week, President Biden opined that Xi Jinping’s economic troubles at home make a Chinese invasion of Taiwan less likely.
Set aside for the moment the question of whether Joe Biden actually has any insight on this matter and, if he does, whether he actually believes what he is saying. Or whether, alternatively, he is simply engaged in the sort of misdirection that one might expect from a man whom a retired top U.S. undercover operative and member of the Committee on the Present Danger: China, Charles “Sam” Faddis describes as a “controlled asset of the Chinese Communist Party.”
What matters is whether it is actually the case that real, growing and possibly irreversible economic, political and strategic problems at home would cause a thug like Xi to forego his long-planned acquisition of Taiwan, at least for the time being. Or does he believe – as have myriad other tyrants, both Communist and of other stripes – that war against some putative foreign enemy is a necessary measure to stave off public demands for change, possibly including the overthrow of his Communist regime?
The next Committee on the Present Danger: China (CPDC) today at 2:00 p.m. ET, Good News or Bad News? Do the CCP’s Internal Crises Preclude, or Precipitate, a Shooting War, will explore the magnitude and implications of the CCP’s internal problems, the totalitarian practice of using aggression to relieve pressure on the leader’s hold on power and the degree to which Xi is in a position to exercise that option in the near future.
